Today is wednesday, and it is maria h-something holiday, a catholic holiday in the south. Only two people had to work today, a mix of emergency work as well as work in the areas of Germany that don't observe the holiday (everyplace except lower franconia). I could have taken the day off, but I don't really have anything better to do (no car yet, or even a bike yet), so I went with Regina to a farm in Beinerstadt. They milk about 250 cows and are in the middle of a much-needed renovation (the first from the old-east german style barns). We just putzed around the farm all day, pretty much. There were some pregnancy checks, some feet to work on, some sick cows to look at some coffee to drink... (a very important part of any good farm visit!) In the afternoon I did an umbilical hernia surgery on a calf, which was my first ever, and it went pretty well. It may have been one of the first done on that farm, because Christiane, the herdswoman was snapping photos of it on her camera phone while I was working. I'll have to see if I can get them from her!
In the afternoon we found a lake to sit at and eat ice cream, a good way to spend an afternoon on call, I think. :) I did drive all the way home from the farm in the manual car, and I did quite well. I still struggle with reverse, I think there's something specific I do wrong...will have to figure that out. But, I think that I could get somewhere on my own now, if I needed to. So, that makes me happy.
Another reason I am ultimately happy right this minute? I've found the Nutella at the store. I bought it last night and it's probably 1/6 gone already... I have to ration it, or I'll end up like dad and the peanut butter cups... However, I think I need some for dessert... But, if you don't know what it is, it's like an ultra-creamy, rich, hazlenutty frosting. Do yourself a favor and buy a jar, I think you can get it at Meijer, even.
Tomorrow should be interesting. Veit and I have to vaccinate some 200 calves intra-nasally...I'll keep you posted on how that goes.
I can't really think of what else you need to know...so if there's something you want to know..write me and ask!
Love you all,
Beth
