June 1940

After Paris, Esther took the kids to a child refugee center in Capbreton, Southern France. Esther left the kids there. The center was run by Madame and Monsieur Minard who were Nazi sympathizers and who would later be convicted of war crimes. The conditions in this center were atrocious so after a while the kids were moved to a local convent where Boris remembers being baptized.

Late July 1940

The kids remained in the convent until Esther returned to Capbreton after a month or so to take the kids back to Montpellier where she had been reunited with Mechel. However when Esther asked the nuns at the convent where her children were, the nuns said that there were no Jewish children at the convent and that the Jewish children had been shipped off to Germany. Esther did not believe them and in the middle of the night broke into the convent, found her children and brought them to Marseilles and shortly after, Montpellier.
