May 11, 1940

The Beizer family left their home on 29 Rue de la Montagne (Mountain Road) on May 11, 1940. In a newspaper article about their journey (see "Beizer Journey Part 8: Lisbon" to read the article) Esther said the family decided to leave after the Germans began bombing Brussels. However before all this, the Beizer family had a comfortable and busy life. Mechel was a world-class jeweler and one of his crowning achievements was making the crown for the King of Romania. In the video clip "Life in Brussels Before the War," Boris describes his memory of the man who would light the gas lamps on the street each night, and how the family would take annual biking vacations to the beaches near Ostend on the North Sea Coast of Belgium.

The family had been already packed up to leave by bicycle for their annual vacation in Ostend. However instead of leaving for this vacation to Northern Belgium, they set out to France to leave their home for good. In the video clip "Leaving Brussels," Boris talks about the events leading up to the family's decision to leave Brussels.

In the 1970's on a trip to Israel Boris decided to stop in Belgium and visit his old home and the street he grew up on. He was saddened to see a large part of the street had been turned into an ugly parking garage. However he decided to return in the 1980's and was shocked to see the street had been reconstructed and the buildings had been rebuilt in ways replicating the pre-War structures.

Many members of the Beizer family have not returned to the places on their journey's route. Boris said Margot did not want to return to any of them because she felt it would have been too painful.
