This might be the most literal blog title I've ever had. The Salzburg City center is surrounded by three mountains, and I climbed them all. The first was very interesting because the mountain is dominated by a monastery, so there were several large shrines along the trail. When I came down the hill, I ended at the river. Salzburg's river is different from rivers in other European cities because it looks like part of nature. It has grass and stone banks instead of the ugly concrete banks on the Seine and Thames and the other rivers I have seen here
The second mountain has the city's fortress at the top. It is possible to take a lift to the top, but I decided to walk it. Once you get up there, the view is spectacularly blocked by a wall and a tree. You do have the option to pay 7 euros for a better view from inside the fortress, but I figured I'd save my money and google the view.
Finally, I started towards the third mountain. I stopped for lunch at the Museum of Modern Art. The view was spectacular and the food was worth the price. Best of all, on the far side of the third mountain is the Augustiner Brewery/Beer Garden. Hundreds of people were sitting at tables in a court yard and buying beers by the liter. Most groups packed picnics, but it was also possible to buy food at the brewery. One group even had a blanket that they spread out for little kids to play on while they enjoyed their beers.
Unfortunately, the tickle in my throat I felt through most of the day ended up being something worse. I felt really crummy by the time I got to the hostel and I slept too late today to do much besides Mass before catching my train. Fingers crossed for me feeling better before I have to start my second class tomorrow.
