(Jan. 25) We got to Matagalpa around Noon and were very happy to discover that the weather is PERFECT! Finally we are to the mountains and loving it.
It took a little while to find a hostel since we plan to stay for a week and wanted to get a good one for a good price. We had some trouble deciding which to choose but finally decided on a very nice place (Hotel Apante) with a friendly owner who offered us a discount for staying a full week. We are paying $5 each per night and have our own room with private bathroom and cable tv. Purified water is free and rooms are cleaned daily.
We were pleasantly surprised to find that evening that food in Matagalpa is cheaper than in the more touristy areas. This IS the promiseland! They have hotdogs for 7c (about 35 cents US), deepfried enchiladas for 10c (50 cents), and soda for 8c (40 cents). WeŽll have to watch our waistlines here.
The next day (Jan. 26) we walked all around the city and saw that they have a very nice cathedral and a good market scene. Matagalpa is NicaraguaŽs coffee production capital so we also went to the Museum of Coffee and found out about some good day trips we could take to nearby coffee plantations.
That night we went to a little restaurant and we split a nacatamal, a very large tamale filled with meat, rice and whatever else they have, I suppose. It was very good and cost 25c (about $1.25 US).
Tomorrow (Jan. 27) we plan to take a trip to Selva Negra (Black Forest). It is a big coffee plantation about 10 miles north of here and run by German immigrants.
