We arrived in Granada just as it was getting dark and scrambled amongst about 10 other gringos on our bus to find a hostel.

Fortunately we found a good one near the center of town, where beds cost more than we would normally pay ($7 per person) but included a big breakfast and free internet.

We got a room with the just the 4 of us, with Joel and Andrea on the bunk beds and Joseph and I on a double. We had cable in our room and the people working there were exceptionally nice. We got the best night´s sleep we´d had yet.

(Jan. 24) The free breakfast the next morning was great. You could choose between two meals:

Nica´s breakfast (Nica is what Nicaraguans are called): gallo pinto (mixed rice and beans), fried cheese in a fried tortilla, eggs and juice

OR

An American style breakfast: 2 pieces of toast, scrambled eggs, a bowl of fruit and juice

During the day we walked around looking at all the beautiful colonial architecture. We got hamburgers for dinner for $2.50 US, which was not so great a deal when all was said and done. The menu claimed they came with french fries, but we got about 5 fries each (no exaggeration). Then they charged 3 cordobas (15 cents) per meal because we had ordered them ¨to go.¨ Silly and I think they only did it because Joseph and I had left to find water and Joel and Andrea don´t speak enough Spanish to argue.

We decided to stay a second night since a good hostel is hard to come by, and traveling is stressful enough to warrant breaking it up as much as possible. The next morning (Jan. 25) we walked about 7 blocks to a bus stop where we could catch the bus to Managua (the capital. From there we could catch a bus to Matagalpa.

All in all, Granada was nice but hot. Still looking forward to those mountains in Matagalpa.
