They started another strike today. It was pretty intense in some parts of town. We heard that near one of the universities they were burning tires and burning cars that drove by (during the strikes there aren't supposed to be any cars on the road). All of the businesses are supposed to close as well but a lot of them stay open and just close their doors when the demonstators walk by. We were visiting with Yuri (Jesús´ brother) at Jesús' internet cafe when the demonstrators walked by. He pulled down the big metal door but didn't have time to attach the little door to it as well. Jesús' other brother, Jorge, stood outside to try and protect the store because the protestors started throwing rocks. Luckily none of them hit the exposed window and Jorge was okay but we were a little nervous for a few minutes. Apparently when the protestors see that your business is open they chant that you are "yellow" and throw rocks. We heard that occasionally they will come inside and trash your store as well. Yuri said he feels bad because he agrees with the protest but they can't afford to close for all the strikes.
Tomorrow we were planning on going with Jesús, and Martina to camp at Lares Hotsprings in the Sacred Valley, but we will have to wait until next week because with the strike there is no transportation. Jesús owns a travel agency so when we go he will have all of the tents and supplies we will need.
The boys at the orphanage have been working on starting a garden. Monday and Tuesday they built a fence and today they planted some herbs. It seems like a great way to keep them busy and also provide some food for the orphanage, although with the size of the garden that they have it won't provide a whole lot.
Erin helped the Beny's in the afternoon on Tuesday (Feb. 19). They own a photo store and had a project that required editing in Photoshop. They were planning on working on it late into the night so it was nice that she was able to help. While she was working on the project I made a photo to give Henrry for his birthday. I had taken some photos of him playing soccer and I edited one of them so that he is putting a move on Ronaldinho. The Beny's made us a 8x10 print of it and we gave it to him on Wednesday. We weren't sure if he liked it at first but later Erin saw him showing it off to all of the boys and volunteers. Here is the picture if you want see. http://public.fotki.com/ejmaue/cuscourubamba-take-2/henrryroncopia.html
On Monday, Feb. 18, we made dinner for the Beny's again. We made tacos with homemade tortillas. It went much smoother this time since we had made the same thing once before. Mr. Beny is a very small man but he can eat a lot. Both times that we have had tacos, he had as much, if not more, than me (Joe).
After church on Sunday (Feb. 17) we headed for Urubamaba to help out at Sunday School. Adriana, the usual teacher, was still on vacation and attendance was very low but we had a good time. The sub, Carmen, brought a craft for the kids but I don't think she realized how long it would take to prepare. She asked me to work on it while she worked with the kids. I got to trace 27 bees on foam paper and then cut them out. Erin helped me at the end but it still took about an hour and a half because they were very intricate. So we had to skip the craft and save it for next week. There is a young girl that attends named Leonora. She really likes the lessons and is very upset because Carmen, the sub, doesn't do a long lesson like Adriana. This Sunday, Erin was sitting near her when Carmen said that God will give us the things that we need. Under her breath Leonora said, "Will he give us a lesson?". We thought it was really funny.
Saturday evening (Feb. 16) we went to a performance of regional dances with Jesús, Manu, Eliazar and Gunda. The dancing was entertaining but the story was a little strange and some of the characters didn't make any sense. In one scene there was an angel who is confronted by three demons. At first they were fighting with swords and then all of a sudden this happy music started playing and they all started prancing around. Next, for some reason a large gorilla ran out and started dancing with them. It was so ridiculous that I could hardly keep myself from laughing. I couldn't let myself laugh because the father of the girl dressed like an angel was sitting right next to me.
It looks like we will be in Cusco for at least another week. We are have a great time and don't mind staying longer. At this point, I don't think Columbia is a possibility. Maybe we'll have to plan a Central America trip as well and visit Columbia then.
