Entry 4 of 57 | show all | print this entry

I have had just about as many Spanish lessons as I can take so I´m quite happy they´ve come to an end. This weeks been pretty dull other than a couple of chilled nights in the imaginatively named ´Pool and Beer´ bar..

I´ve been staying with a Guatelamalean family for the past two weeks who dont speak a word of English, which has grown a little weary especially when the little runt of the family decided to scribble with a pen all over my only jumper/sweater. I´ve also has a bout of the flu simiakr to that which hit us all in the US last winter and knocked me for six ...I rested up in my 6´x 6´ prison-like bedroom and luckily the virus didnt incopacitate me for too long. I also managed to lose my camera for good this time although I swear some local thief is more likely to have gone down my bag when I wasnt looking... Ironically I think it was when I was burning my pix to CD which I guess is the The silver lining too...pix will be uploaded soon - honest..

Furthermore, I´ve had to escape my Guat family´s cooking a couple of times this week with an ´Indian´(it was a better curry than I´ve had in NYC - check out Xela´s Sabor de India) as I only get served meat every third day. There´s only so many refried beans, eggs and rice a boy can eat before succumbing a good ol´ ´Ruby´.

Suffice to say its been a rather sh*tty, tiring, frustrating week (broken up only by a few cervezas)  and I will not be sad to see the back of the ´always raining´, polluted, dreary armpit of Guatemala that is known as Quezeltenango..(Sorry Andy T..I´m not a buyer). I´m sure its a better atmosphere in the Summer when more people are around but that didn´t help me right now. On the plus side I definitely immersed myself in the Spanish experience as there was not much else to do! A few new school friends made the week bearable..shouts out to Tom, Jason, Kim, Johan, Melton, Thea, Anna and ghetto Tisha...

Traveller Tip 1- unless you are planning to ONLY study spanish at Xela I wouldnt plan to stay too long around here...likewise touristy Antigua (perhaps as a base for day trips).

Traveller Tip 2 - get hooked up to unlimited skype for a few euros as most cafes have headsets and will eventually work out cheaper and easier than searching for cheap places to make calls...

OK..thats it for now...Im heading back to treat myself to a couple of days in paradise in San Pedro on Lago de Atitlan (I deserve it) before making my way to Flores/ Tikal to see the mayan ruins... seeya Xela...
