I was kinda done with Antigua after the Volcan Pacaya hike as the town was quite touristy and more expensive than it really should have been for Guatemala. The Black Cat hostel was 60Q for a dom but I got a free 35Q breakfast (about the going rate)...I wasnt sure whether to head straight to Xela but after talking to a couple of people Lago de Atitlan seemed to be worth the trip. Atitlan is a lake surrounded by a multitude of volcanoes i.e totally pictureseque.
I managed to work out which 'chicken' bus to take although I had to make a connection...I was quite proud of myself as I made what seemed at the time an easy transition to the next bus only to find the local who had pointed me in the direction of the Panajachel bus had actually put me on a bus for Guat City in the completely wrong direction!! Doh!
After the 30 mins journey in the wrong direction, I got off and waited for the right bus on the other side of the road. Three bus rides and three hours later I arrived in 'Pana' where I took a boat over to San Pedro. Although gringos get charged double by the locals for the journey, it was well worth it. The lake with the background of towering volcanoes was amazing...
The one must-go place in San Pedro for me was Zoo-Lo - a chilled out Israeli bar with lots of cushions and mats where ´Hard drugs are not tolerated´ (read between the lines).. I could have stayed in that bar for 7 days let alone in San Pedro itself.
That night, my dorm-mates and a I met up with a dutch girl where I learnt my first dutch word..Apparently Stoned and Drunken have beeen conjigated to form one word in the land of canals...go the Dutch...We had a few beers at the ´Budha Bar´ before heading off to a local 'afterhours' party...Its a shame I only had time for one night in San Pedro before school starts but I hope I get back there at some point before it becomes comercialised...
Photos still to be added.....
