At 5 AM Friday morning, the temperature was -6 and within a few hours it was above 0 and the snow was disappearing.  We drove through Baltimore, Maryland and the tunnel, through Washington, DC amid construction and across the Woodrow Wilson Bridge into Alexandria, Virginia.  Construction to replace the present 6 lane bridge with a 12 lane one is well under way.

A lunch date at Bravo (http://www.bravoitalian.com/index.html) in Fredericksburg, VA with Chef Pat was on the agenda.  Upon arrival, signs of spring were everywhere with flowers, short sleeves, motorcycles and 11 degrees (double and add 30 for F).  A great visit with Patrick, good eats at the restaurant, and on the road again toward Newport News.

A trip down hwy 17 revealed fields greening up, tractors at work and some crops up a few inches.  We detoured across the Rappahannock River in search of the Steamboat Era Museum in Irvington, VA (http://www.steamboateramuseum.org/).  There are nautical night lights available there, which I need.  We arrived at 4:30, to notice the winter hours are 10-4 with appointment.  Winter, it isn't winter.  We will stop by again in May.

Back on the road to Newport News led us through Dixie, or past a sign that said Dixie.  I missed the town.  The next two days were spent with Ann and Ron in Newport News, doing all the things siblings and in-laws do since seeing each other the last time, over a year ago.  Visits from Chris and Sarah rounded out hugs and chats with all the Gregorys.  Out to eat Indian cuisine and Diner fare, shopping at a specialty grocery, walks outside with Maggie, concerts from the bird chorus in the back yard, chasing away a woodpecker sending NOISE down the chimney, watching hilarious TV, relaxing and hours of conversation filled two days.  Oh, and not to be forgotten... Sarah and Chris' entrapment of over an hour in the tunnel because of an accident somewhere ahead of them as they were making their way to the airport for Chris' flight to Marietta, was a source of some anxiety.  They missed the last supper, but did make it to the airport just in time.

Doug and I chose a route for the Monday trip to Myrtle Beach to Jamin Leather, in search of the white leather vest for my motorcycle club.  The site has leathers for way more than motorcyclists, some things I don't even want to see.  Enough said.
