Where I stayed
For months people asked me if I was excited about my trip.. well who wouldn't be happy to escape to a tropical paradise? But the reality of the whole thing did not hit me until I was landing in San Jose two days ago and the pilot was speaking in Spanish. So far the airport has been by far my most stressful experience. I was surprised at how helpful all of the locals were but my anxiety to find the OTS representative made my Spanish-speaking more broken than usual.
After failed attempts at a pay phone to contact OTS I started to panic. Thankfully a nearby man made the call on his phone and I found my ride. Throughout the day more and more of the group trickled in and it was nice getting to know everyone at dinner
The next day (1/22) at 6:30AM we were awoken for the typical gallo pinto breakfast on the roof of the hotel. I was overjoyed that coffee and fresh fruit were available. We headed to OTS headquarters for orientation and to go over course syllabuses. My oral language placement test was quite the struggle. I could not believe how much vocabulary I have forgotten in just a year.
Before dinner I ventured out with some friends to try and figure out the exchange to withdraw colones and buy a few things. I was very hesitant to type 10,000 into the machine, even though it turns out that is only $20.
Today (1/23) we had a full day of classes which was a little overwhelming. But I'm lucky to be so interested in what we will be studying and all of the activities! For dinner some of us scoped out an Italian restaurant and enjoyed a nice meal and our first experience with Costa Rica's national beer Imperial.
