A short drive from Trichy had us into Pondicherry mid-morning. After getting settled into our guesthouse rooms we all walked to the much awaited bakery, Bomcakes for all types of croissants and good coffee.  As we were making our way I was quickly realizing that the Pondicherry I had in my mind (that of nice boulevards and buildings) did not exist.  Pondicherry is much like any other town in India.  There is some existence of French architecture but the buildings are run down and the nicer ones are being used for government and police.  This was all discovered about an hour after leaving the bakery and wandering around.  The sea front was not really much better and after a couple of hours I decided to head back (a little disappointed) to the guest house and spend the rest of the afternoon catching up on my blogs.

In the evening most of us treated ourselves to an expensive (by India standards) meal at a place called Le Club.  Having a predominantly French menu most of chose steak of some form or another, myself having the steak sizzler with mushroom sauce.  It was really delicious and a nice change.  Afterwards a few of us did some window shopping as we wandered back to our place.  At night Pondicherry especially around this area seemed to have more a French feel to it and I actually enjoyed wandering around in the evening; closer to what Pondicherry was like in my mind.  Returning to the guesthouse I joined a few others on the terrace for a Kingfisher and conversation.

Jeanne Eddington on

Pondicherry is the setting for the first part of Yann Martel's "Life of Pi". Wondering if there is a zoo there (or if there ever was one)?
