I've added some sample photos here, but you will see more of what I mean as our time here progresses.
We promised ourselves that we would be back to one of our most favorite places in the world. For those of you that may not know us well, we traveled extensively in 2003-04. We lived in Southern Spain for 5 months, on the coast of Portugal for two and traveled to just under 50 cities in the EU. We were also in Mexico for 6 months and South East Asia for five. So when I say favorite places, I don't mean we've been everywhere but have a nice selection to choose from. So what is it that attracts us, first and foremost, it's the people. They are proud of their home, friendly, open and always have a minute to chat. After you get through the "where you going", "where you been" and "do you need transport", the conversation will change. They are very religious and superstitious at the same time. When they get sick they blame it on a curse and to get better the give offerings and pray to their gods. The island is primary Hindu, but different than India. Next is the how ornate things are around you. The temples, wood and stone, and the batik clothing, it's just amazing everywhere you turn there something that catches your eye. Then there is the color, it comes from everywhere, the rice paddies, the ocean, the offerings, the flower arrangements and most of all gardens. Beautiful! Lastly it is the island's energy. I don't just mean movement, but the actual island itself has a way about it. I know the statement is a bit "new age", but it's been said many times before and I believe it to be true.
