Okinawa, Japan
Entry 1 of 1 | show all | print this entry |
I spent my last year in the Marine Corps living in Okinawa, Japan. I was 22 years old, married, and my daughter had just turned 2 years old. Like most Marines, you start off in the states and you end up serving your final year in Okinawa. Since I was married and I didn't want to reenlist and serve three years in Japan, I opted for a one year tour unaccompanied, which means you go solo, no wife or child for the entire year. The first thing I did was buy a car when I got to the island since I didn't want to stay cooped up on base. I made a ton of friends and we would hangout just about every night and especially every weekend. It's only one year on the island, but you end up spending lots of time with your friends and before you know it, it seems like you've known them for years. Since I was the one with the car, I would do the driving and everyone else would pay for the gas as we ventured off base to explore the island. Although I did quite of bit of drinking and partying the entire year, I also had a job to do for the Marines and I was attending college close to full-time in the evenings. I took a Japanese culture class as an elective in college and actually learned to speak a bit of Japanese, at least enough to get by in town. I really enjoyed the food, but back then I was not into Sushi so I stayed away from the raw stuff. Now it's a different story, I love to go out for Sushi, my favorite is the spicy tuna roll.
