Hey Hey and a Big G'Day toya
Ths is a page I've been using for some time now.
Moving around from school to school, trying to keep belongings down to a minimum, doing my best not to collect any books besides the one I read while traveling and those I use while teaching, how do I keep up to date and where in the world do I get most of my information?
for those of you who read my blog you will have seen this in many of them;
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Some of you may have taken the time to find out what it is but most probably wouldn't have. Wikipedia has been banned here in China for many years due to it containing almost anything 'news' based BUT there are ways around the Great Fire Wall of China. Wikipedia is only one site of the many Wiki sites. I use several of them each day and I am surprised at how many people have never actually heard or used them.
I use them for my daily news updates, travelplans around China and information on almost any country I read about on Travelpod along with any other small and strange ideas I need to satisfy. They are all free and if you are a sharing type of person you can join Wiki and update them as you wish.
So to help spread the word of Wiki and help it grow I created a page of all the Wiki sites I could find.
If you are a parent show your kids as they are awesome stuff for homework.
If you are a student at any level you'll find a lot of what you need here.
If you want to know how to 'do something' you will find a step by step guide in Wiki.
If you are about to travel to a non-English speaking country you will find free phrase books complete with several lessons to help you get started and calm some nerves.
If you are like me and want an answer to almost everything that has bothered you during the day so you can sleep at night there is a Wiki site that can help.
Below is a detailed list of free Wiki sites beginning with some background information.
Simply click on the main heading and it will take you to that sites Main Menu.
I've left in all the sub headings you can browse when you get there.

WHY WIKI AND WHAT IS A WIKI?
A wiki is a collection of web pages designed to enable anyone who accesses it to contribute or modify content, using a simplified markup language. Wikis are often used to create collaborative websites and to power community websites. For example, the collaborative encyclopedia Wikipedia is one of the best known wikis. Wikis are used in businesses to provide affordable and effective intranets and for Knowledge Management. Ward Cunningham, developer of the first wiki software, WikiWikiWeb, originally described it as "the simplest online database that could possibly work".
History
Wiki Wiki bus at Honolulu International AirportWikiWikiWeb was the first site to be called a wiki. Ward Cunningham started developing WikiWikiWeb in 1994, and installed it on the Internet domain c2.com on March 25, 1995. It was named by Cunningham, who remembered a Honolulu International Airport counter employee telling him to take the "Wiki Wiki" shuttle bus that runs between the airport's terminals. According to Cunningham,
"I chose wiki-wiki as an alliterative substitute for 'quick' and thereby avoided naming this stuff quick-web."
On March 15, 2007, wiki entered the Oxford English Dictionary Online.
The English-language Wikipedia has the largest user base among wikis on the World Wide Web and ranks in the top 10 among all websites in terms of traffic. Other large wikis include the WikiWikiWeb, Memory Alpha, Wikitravel, World66 and Susning.nu, a Swedish-language knowledge base.
Wikitravel is a project to create a free, complete, up-to-date, and reliable worldwide travel guide. So far we have 18,555 destination guides and other articles written and edited by Wikitravellers from around the globe

A collaborative project to produce a free-content multilingual dictionary.
Designed as the lexical companion to Wikipedia, the encyclopaedia project, Wiktionary has grown beyond a standard dictionary and now includes a thesaurus, a rhyme guide, phrase books, language statistics and extensive appendices. We aim to include not only the definition of a word, but also enough information to really understand it. Thus etymologies, pronunciations, sample quotations, synonyms, antonyms and translations are included.

Wikevent is a project to create a worldwide, Free (as in "free speech") compendium of public events like concerts, lectures, parties, classes, sporting events, and every other sort of event which you can think of. There are lots and lots of events sites on the internet. They all seem to have one thing in common: not enough events data. We're trying to solve that problem. The idea is that venues, artists, speakers, clubs, etc. want to spread their event information as far as possible but they only really want to enter the data once, usually that means on their own website.
A website devoted to the coordination of the Wikimedia Foundation's projects, including Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, and the MediaWiki software on which it runs. Other venues for discussing the Foundation and these projects include the Wikimedia mailing lists (particularly foundation-l) and the various IRC channels.
