We arrived in La Serena in the early evening of 28th December after spending the day on the bus. We were walking to our hotel, which wasn't far, when the pavement sprang up out of nowhere and I tripped over and landed with a thud on top of my small backback with my big backpack rising up and hitting me on the head. I felt very sorry for myself then because I hurt both my knees and ripped my trousers. But we trundled on to our hotel where Ed cleaned up my bloody knees. I now have lovely red knees - very attractive! But we have noticed that a lot of the pavements here are uneven and we have both nearly fallen several times. And no, not because of the alcohol!
We have spent the last four days in La Serena and it has been lovely. Again we had a really nice hotel with a great breakfast and a bath in our en-suite, which we made full use of as we have not seen a bath in 2 months! Not that we are dirty you understand, just that we have only had access to showers! We have spent our time here wandering around the town and lazing on the beach, although we did walk pretty much 3/4 the length of the beach on our first day here, only stopping when we realised we were nearly at the next town! So we have had relaxing days and our nights have been spent chilling out with nice food and good wine, and our own tv! Pure luxury! On New Years Eve we wanted to go out for dinner but we found ourselves faced with the same problem as Christmas Eve - nowhere was open. We seemed to walk around for ages before we found a restaurant that was willing to stay open. It turned out to be a very good one though - chinese so we were happy wth that. We had a nice meal and a bottle of wine and then we watched some fireworks go off at midnight and celebrated with yet another bottle of wine. It felt very strange to know that everyone back home had celebrated three hours earlier though!
Today we head North to San Pedro where we hope to pick up a tour to the Salt Flats in Bolivia. Its a 17 hour bus ride so I'm guessing we'll be pretty tired tomorrow!
Happy New Year everyone and catch you soon!
