Jellyfish sting - we all know how to soothe them!
Entry 83 of 132 | show all | print this entry |
We arrived in Penang late afternoon on Thursday after a pretty uneventful (thank goodness) bus journey and ferry ride. We went out for dinner with Andrea who had come from the Cameron Highlands with us. We tried some Malaysia style noodles in a vegetarian restaurant in Georgetown where our hostel is. Then we walked around checking out the area. We saw the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion and were quite taken aback by the shocking blue colour! We weren't allowed to go inside as you have to take a proper tour so we just admired the size of the building from the outside. It was built by Cheong Fatt Tze who used to be a penniless teenager in China but who is now a very successful Entrepreneur. It apparently has 38 rooms, all of which are decorated according to the rules of Feng Shui. It would have been good to see inside but never mind. Last night we went out for a few drinks with Andrea and an American couple we met at our hostel. That was fun! Today (Friday) the three of us (us and Andrea), decided to take a bus to Teluk Bahang to watch the dragon boat racing, as we are not mega impressed by Georgetown. We took what we were told was a half hour bus ride and arrived at the dam where the racing was taking place 2 hours later! Seriously no sense of times over here! We were dropped off at the bottom of the hill and had to walk up 310 steps to reach the dam area. (Yes I counted them!) By that time we were seriously in need of water so we bought some bottles and tipped some of them over our heads and drank some of them. Who said a shower couldn't be public!! We then sat and watched about 20 of the races between teams from all over the world. It was really good fun. Then we went back to wait for the bus to take us to Batu Ferringhi Beach. We were really looking forward to going in the sea and cooling off. At first the sea was quite refreshing but soon it was too hot even in the water. Also we were nearly taken out by a jet ski! While we were sitting chilling out in the water I felt something bite me. I lookeed down at my shoulder and saw an orange trail. I wiped it off and felt it pull at my skin and then my shoulder started to really sting. That is when I realised that I had been stung by a jelly fish. My first thought? Ed would have to wee on me to take away the pain! Not keen on this idea, Ed went off to check if there were jellyfish in this area as none of us had actually seen the thing that stung me. He came back armed with 2 cans of coke - the guy in the cafe had told him that yes, there are jellyfish in this area but it was ok not to wee on me as coke does the same job and so we could use coke instead. We both breathed a sigh of relief for that piece of info! The coke eased the pain a little bit but I now have a really attractive red, bubbly patch on my shoulder. Beautiful! But it all adds to the adventure hey!! After my run in with the jellyfish we decided not to venture back into the water and instead went in search of dinner. We ate at a really nice restaurant near the beach and then we headed back to Georgetown on a very rickety bus which we were unsure was actually bound for Georgetown or in fact had just said that to get a fare! But sure enough we arrived back at the hostel and played a few games of cards before heading to bed to try to get a good sleep ready for our full day of travel tomorrow.
