Oh my Lord! Kuala Lumpur is even more humid than Singapore if that's possible! We had a very interesting bus ride through customs. We got one bus from Singapore to the border where we had to queue for an hour with all our backpacks just to get a stamp and then we had to get another bus 5 minutes down the road just to queue for another hour with all our backpacks to get another stamp to get into Malaysia. And we were queuing with Asian people who do not know how to queue. That's an interesting experience as people push in front of you left, right and centre. Then we had to get yet another bus 15 minutes down the road to the bus stop where we change to another bus for our trip to Kuala Lumpur. But the fun didn't stop there. Oh no. We got to Kuala Lumpur and walked in the wrong direction so ended up walking for about 45 minutes before we got to Bukit Bintang where we wanted to stay, only all the hostels were full. One guy took pity on us as we were exhausted and he let us leave our bags at his hostel while we continued to look for a place. We eventually found a little hostel run by a really sweet Malaysian guy who loved to talk! We stayed with him for one night before moving to our original choice when people checked out the next day.
On our first full day in KL we got up at 6.15am to go to queue for tickets to go up the Petronas Towers. That was another Asian queue experience! But we got our tickets and were able to go up to the bridge in the towers at 12noon. The Towers are really good, especially since they do not cost anything to go up. We watched a film about the towers before we went up to the bridge to look out at the view and then we were taken to a room where we could watch a lightning hit display and see another movie about the building of the towers. It was cool.
When we finished in the towers we went to the park around the back of the towers where we had seen a shallow pool to cool off in! We were paddling in the water when a guard came over and moved us on as we were not allowed to sit on the edge of the pool! We moved to the grass area and got moved on by another guard. Clearly a park is not for sitting or paddling in!!
We then went for a late lunch at the best chicken rice restaurant in Asia, apparently. I obviously got a veggie option but Ed confirmed that the chicken and rice was in fact very good. It has won awards in China and Asia as the best so it can't be bad!
We decided to go up the KL Tower at pm to watch the sunset. Unfortunately the sun didn't actually go down until 7.30pm so we spent a good 3 hours at the top just looking out over the city. This tower is different to the Petronas Towers as it gives a 360 degree view of the city. The city looks beautiful at night too with all the buildings lit up. The Petronas Towers look especially beautiful in the dark, so we were glad we stayed to watch them light up. When we got back to the bottom we were just in time to see a laser light show from the KL Tower, with the tower itself turning different colours. It was cool.
On our second day in KL we went to the Batu Caves. That was a fun ride! We had to take a local bus to the caves. We really did take our lives in our hands as they cannot drive over here! It is so scary! They chop and change lanes without indicating, they overtake when there is traffic coming the other way and swerve to avoid each other, they don't stop at red lights and the mopeds weave in and out of all the cars as if they have all the space in the world. I am so glad we decided against buying bikes for Asia as I think we would have been killed by now! We did get to the caves in one piece surprisingly though and they are quite cool. There are 272 steps to the top and then inside the caves small temple prayer areas have been built. There are wild monkeys everywhere too, so you have to watch your bottles of water or they will be stolen by the monkeys! The caves themselves are beautiful too, with really high stone walls covered in greenery. We spent a couple of hours there and had an early dinner there too before taking the bus back and listening to cheesy music on the way. "Suicidal" was actually one of the songs - how appropriate! A guy actually jumped onto the bus as we were driving along, as the doors are always open, then he realised it was the wrong bus and jumped off again while we were still moving! It is crazy!
Today we also went around China Town to have a look at the markets and try to find some DVD cases to send home photos. The markets are really good actually. So aside from the scary bus ride it was a good day!
