We have spent the last two days in Singapore and boy is it humid! We arrived early evening on Wednesday and got the MRT train to the city, and walked 10minutes to the hostel. Even at this time of night the humidity was ridiculous. We checked into the hostel and met Jen, who had incidentally got the same MRT as us. We ended up sharing a dorm as Jen was put up in the attic and didn't like the height of the bed and the fact that she couldn't sit up without banging her head! When she had moved beds we all went out for dinner to the food court round the corner. It was our first sample of proper Asian food and it was very good!
On Thursday Ed and I walked all over Singapore and it is a big city! We started off walking down Orchard Road which is the expensive shopping area. We were heading to the Chinese and Russian Embassies but they closed at 11.30 and we got there at 12.00 so walked all that way for nothing and then had to walk all the way back. We cheated actually and got the MRT to the riverside area and the Esplanade where there was a millennium type wheel which we went for a ride in and got an excellent view of the city from all directions, including the river and the sea. It was really good. From here we walked along the riverside and through to China Town where we went to a temple and watched a prayer session going on. That was fascinating, watching them in their costumes playing the instruments and doing the prayer rituals. After this we walked through the markets and bought a couple of things before we went back to the hostel to meet Jen for dinner. Unfortunately though I got very sick so Ed and Jen went for dinner without me while I went to bed. They brought me back some lovely iced fruit though!
On Friday we went with Jen to the zoo and then the Night Safari. That was awesome. The zoo is amazing with a lot of the animals roaming freely through the trees overhead. Ed became a prime target for an Orang-utans pee house! He thought it was raining at first but then realised it was only his shoulder that was getting wet! How funny! We saw loads of animals and saw some of them being fed too. It was really good fun. They have lots of space to play in and are really well looked after. When the zoo closed at 6pm we went for dinner and saw some Balinese dancers and fire breathers. Then we went in to the Night Safari. We did the four walks around the safari first, where we got to see lots of animals in the dark and watch them without them knowing we were there. Then we went to the Creatures of the Night show where some of the animals came onto a little island so we could get a good look at them being fed. Finally we went on the tram around the areas of the park we couldn't see on foot. We saw deer roaming around freely and lots of other animals across the other side of the moat. It was definitely worth doing. We would definitely recommend the zoo and night safari!
