We have spent the last 2 days in Adelaide after spending all day on Thursday on a train from Melbourne. It took 10 hours on the Overland train, which was a really cool train. The seats were really comfy and turned round any way you wanted! We also pretty much had the whole carriage to ourselves bar about another 5 people and we had tea and coffee brought to us for morning and afternoon tea! How civilised are we?!
While in Adelaide we have been pretty busy. We went to a fresh food market and spent ages walking around looking at all the different stalls selling everything from bread and cakes to Indian, Asian and Chinese food stuffs. We bought some fresh food for our dinner the next couple of nights which will make a welcome change from noodles and pasta! That afternoon we went to look around the shopping district. Ed managed to embarrass me in the chocolate shop as there were some little kids there holding out their hands for chocolate samples so Ed went and got on his knees next to them and held his hands out too! It worked though! The ladies thought he was funny and he came back with chocolate for us both so all was good!
We went to the Opal Mining Museum on Saturday morning and got to see a replica cave mined for opals. We also got to see some Aboriginal art and we learned all about the significance of the imagery in the artwork and about the Aboriginal culture in general. It was fascinating. Neither of us realised there was so much meaning in the art the Aboriginals create. I can't wait to teach the kids at school about it! After the museum we went to the art gallery where we nearly got ourselves thrown out for running around the gallery chasing each other with water from a canoe (don't ask!) and then for taking pictures when the sign clearly states no photography! Oops, what rebels we are! We then went to the Botanical gardens which houses the biggest glass house in the southern hemisphere. We saw some beautiful flowers and these really big water lilies that can be anything up to 3 metres in diameter. We put our hands in the pond next to the lilies and all the little fish came up and nipped our fingers! It was fun!
Saturday night was spent at our first AFL game! This is Australian Rules Football and is similar to rugby. There are 4 quarters each lasting approx 25-30mins and the scores are taken according to how many 6's are kicked, how many 1's are kicked and then the overall score. As neither of us supported a particular team and we were sitting at the crossover between supporters we decided to support a team each and had a bet to see who would win. Ed was supporting North Melbourne (the Kangaroos) and I was supporting Port Adelaide (Power). The scores were really close throughout the game with only a few points in it. The team in the lead was changing every few minutes. It was such an exciting game! I thought I had it in the bag near the end but in the last couple of minutes the kangaroos came through with a 6, meaning the final score was 74 to power and 78 to the kangaroos. Talk about close! Ed took great pleasure in teasing me all the way back about being a loser! Charming!
Today we are flying to Perth where we will be seeing another friend of Ed's so will post again soon!
