When we got to Coffs Harbour the hostel people were all at the bus stop so we chose a hostel and went back in the bus with Ian, the Manager. He took us to a couple of lookout points looking for migrating whales but unfortunately we only managed to spot a couple. Once we had checked into the hostel it was getting quite late in the afternoon so we headed into town for Ed to get a haircut and also so we could stock up on food. Then it was back to the hostel for the evening where we spent the night chatting to an Irish couple who are in our dorm.
Our only full day here was spent firstly walking round the botanical gardens seeing all the different plants and trees from all around the world. Then after lunch we borrowed a canoe and took it all the way up the river and then all the way back down as far as the sea. That was really good fun but very hard work, especially as Ed kept steering us into trees and bushes! I ended up with half a tree in my lap! We both ended up very wet too after a bit of a water fight with the oars First sight of the harbour.

In the hostel tonight it was punch night which is $7 for as much punch as you can drink and some drinking games. It was a fun night but the punch wasn't all that great.
Before we left Coffs Harbour to go to Newcastle we went for a walk up to Mutton Bird Island, which is an island just off the mariner where you get an excellent view across the ocean from the top. We sat there for ages watching for whales but we didn't get to see any. We did see a group of about 4 or 5 dolphins though who were playing near the harbour so we watched them for a while. Dolphins are really playful and fun to watch! Hopefully we'll get to swim with them somewhere along the way.
