Yesterday morning we parked at a train station to get the train into San Francisco and the damn train pulled away without us - how rude! We had to wait for the next one which we thought was very inconsiderate! We rang the company and Ali kicked ass! Then the pay phone Ali phoned from rang and she thought it was them phoning back so she picked it up only to be greeted by a dirty phone caller! She promptly hung up! Following this we actually managed to catch a train and went into the city. We went to see an oriental talent show display with kids singing, tap dancing and doing kung foo. Then we went to the Golden Gate Bridge to watch an airshow as it was Fleet Week in the city and so there was lots of free entertainment going on - perfect timing! One of the air displays was by the Blue Angels (the USA version of the Red Arrows). That was pretty cool. We then walked over the bridge and back again, looking down over the ocean as we walked. Ali said to me at this time that she thought the Golden Gate Bridge was actually gold, which I giggled at although I can't explain why it is called the Golden Gate Bridge when in fact it is red
Last night was time for more boring chores - laundry! Then we had problems finding a Walmart to stay at but we eventually found one at 12.30am (very tired again!)
Today we decided to go in to the city by Bart train (that is not the simpson variety!!!) so we parked at the station and then headed in to the city, on yet another packed train! We did some shopping and went to a computer shop to look at the new Sony Vaio UX which is like a mini laptop. We liked the look of it so we asked the shop assistant to get it out of its security case and demo it. He said that he couldn't do this for security reasons - do I really look that dodgy? Actually don't answer that!!!
We went on to Pier 39 by the water, stopping on the way at a school fete where we watched a young band of 4 boys about 14 years old called "Billy the Kid". They were very good and will go far! We also stopped off at an Italian festival and sat in a Ferrari Testarossa owned by some man in the Ferrari Owners Club - how pretentious!
On Pier 39 there was a music festival which was all part of Fleet Week. This was really cool (and free, woohoo!)
At sunset we went up the Coit Tower to watch the sun go down over the Golden Gate Bridge and also over Alcatraz which we didn't get the chance to see. On the way back to the train we stopped off at a bar where a live band was playing blue grass music. These guys were pretty old but pretty cool and the atmosphere was wicked!
San Fran here we come.
