The next day we drove along the Wanganui River Road. This was a very scenic road, although alot of it was unsealed, so it took a while to get anywhere. We stopped the night at a nice place called Raetihi, where there were were supposed to be glow worms, but we couldn't locate the path in the dark.
Taupo was our next stop - the main town on New Zealands largest lake, Lake Taupo. It is a cool town, with lots of stuff to do, including loads of thermal stuff (our campsite had its own thermal pool - nice in the rain!)
Yesterday we spent 8 hours on the road due to us driving another scenic route 'The Forgotten World Highway'. This was partly unsealed as well so it took ages (our table fell out of it's holder due to the bumpiness of the road!). Eventually we came to Opunake - near Mt Taranake. Mt Taranake is a proper volcano (i.e. it is very pointed with steep sides). We even managed to see the top for a brief second! ( there is a local saying that goes... 'if you can see the mountain it's going to rain. If you can't see the mountain it's already raining!'
P.S. We passed two mini golf courses, both closed because the kids are now back at school.
P.P.S. Played one at the Quad Bike place - a rip off at $5 for 9 waterlogged holes. Yvette crept in at the end to win. 7.5 - 9.5.
P.P.P.S. on the same day(!) we plyed Taupo Mini Golf - much better course. Ed won by 3 to extend the lead to 7.5 - 10.5 (I wish we would draw another round to get rid of these stupid half points!
