The past month has been eventful. Along with the arrival and departure of friends and family, I have maintained an extremely busy work schedule, my cat had kittens and I was bit twice by the same damn dog! I will elaborate...
To begin, my sister left last week and I was incredibly sad to see her go. In the two short weeks that she was here, I became quite accustomed to having her around. We spent most of the time here in Cerro Azul, accompanied of course during the first week by my fabulous soon-to-be brother in law Jeremiah
Another visitor to whom it was very difficult to say goodbye was Julianne. She was here for two weeks just prior to my hermana and cuñado (Spanish vocabulary folks). We also had a great time here in my site. Jules was such a sport, handling the big bugs, humidity and cold showers like a champ. Sometimes I forget that I have adapted well to the living conditions here and that someone coming directly from home might find them a bit challenging, to say the least! Anyway, as I mentioned we stayed here in Cerro Azul most of the time but did manage two really wonderful trips: one to the beach for whale watching and another to Cuenca. I would include pictures but my camera was dead and Jules isn't exactly a prolific photographer! I think of all 20 pictures she took, 15 were of my cat!
Well, since returning to my solitary routine (boo hoo) I have continued with book club meetings, grant writing, the exercise group and the world map project
Before I finish, I should explain the dog bites that I mentioned above. My neighbors' dog is CUJO...seriously. Actually, he doesn't have a name, but I'm pretty sure he has rabies or perhaps is possessed. He has sunk his teeth into several neighborhood victims, including myself and nothing has yet been done to resolve the situation (i.e. KILL IT). However, I sense the patience of the community running thin due to the recent attack on a five year old girl. Until the monster is euthanized (HA! or in this case shot in the head...there's no animal control in Ecuador), I do not dare to take even two steps onto my neighbors' property.
Other animal news. My cat had kittens! In my personal opinion she is far too young to be a mother and the father is a tramp (has managed to knock up all female cats within a 500 meter radius). But they sure are cute little things. There were five to begin with and we are now down to three. There's another story. The last kitten to be born was the first to die, within three days. He wasn't nursing. The second one, however, survived three weeks, but was also not well-nourished
Well, that should be it for now. There are plenty of photos to check out. Enjoy. And don't forget to write!
