It was a fine day to test out one of the soft adventure tours offered by a 5-star hotel. Using in a Tibetan-style house as a hotel room, it was perhaps time to see what a real Tibetan house in this area was like. This Tibet tour is a walking tour within the village of Ringha. Houses here are typically enclosed within a courtyard, which also encloses the family's livestock of chickens, pigs, cows, fiercely guarded by the incomparable Tibetan mastiff. I have encountered this species elsewhere where Tibetans live, and the one here is no different, having to be tethered on a thick chain. They look like they can crush sticks and stones with their mandibles and have a temper which never lets down till a visitor is well out of range.

The house we were to visit was not one of those dingy ones with animal quarters below, but one purpose-built in anticipation of the influx of rich tourists drawn by the exotic attraction of this remote location. A paradox, yes, but this is still China after all. It was stlll heartening to see that some traditions are kept alive, like that of air drying slaughtered animals, spinning their own (yak) wool, and weaving.
