June 29, 2009

Have you ever had one of those days when the world is crashing down around you ? You know the ones I'm talking about .... The Boss is breathing down your neck, the kids are screaming in the back of the car, the turkey dinner you spent hours making just exploded in the oven.

This is when you close your eyes and let the world melt away from you.  The stress slowly releases you, the noise that has been piercing your brain quiets, the bright lights fade away, the smell of burning poultry lessens.... and you picture a quiet idyllic place that you reserve in your mind's eye just for these exasperating moments in life.

For some this place is a quiet beach in the Carribean, for others its at the top of a mountain range, or maybe on the dock at sunset in Northern Ontario.  Its different for everyone.

Santorini is such a place.  In fact, I bet that a fairly high percentage of people who travel to this lovely Greek island go back to their cubicles or classrooms full of sugar-high screaming school children and think back to the time they spent on this magical island situated in the middle of a green-blue sparkling sea.

As for me, I have a few of these places tucked away in my subconscious for life's challenging moments.  I'd like to think that I'll be adding Santorini to this repertoire of oasis-like mental escapes.

For now, I only have a few more hours on this island before boarding a Ferry back to Athens for a quick overnight before hopping a flight to Paris. (Oh, Europe, will you marry me?)

I will be sure to post pictures and write more about my adventures on Thira (Santorini) in the next few days.

I can't bare to waste any more time in an internet cafe when I can be drinking Frappes and soaking up the sun these last few hours in Santorini.

Love from the Island of Perfect Blue Buildings,

Erin and Andrew
