Arriving early in Arequipa we grabbed a taxi (to our surprise it was the same as the locals' price) in to the Plaza de Armas. While working out which direction to head we were approached by a lady offering a room in her family residence. Always being wary of being approached on the street we decided to check it out after negotiating a cheaper rate. Her family home was in a quiet part of town, only three blocks walk from the Plaza de Armas. We had our own room with a view of the mountains, Chachani and Pichu Pichu the extinct volcano El Misti that surround Arequipa. One of the fantastic things about being in a family residence was that we could get our clothes washed! It was fantastic to actually not have to wear clothes for four to five days running without changing. This was a very special treat!

Being in a secure residence we managed to catchup on our sleep and enjoyed a yummy breakfast. We had wanted to go rafting on the Rio Chile River but unfortunately when it came to book the trip the rafts were all full. Oh well we'll try it maybe in Cusco. For a couple of days we just lazed around, tried to acclimatize and just relaxed. The family residence had that kind of feel and from reading the recommendations book the owner had, it appeared most people only intended to stay for a day and ended up staying for a few. On our last night we decided to eat at one of the touristy restaurants overlooking Plaza de Armas. Megan tried the traditional meal called Lomo saltado (consisting of beef, onion, garlic, capsicum all mixed in) while Rick feasted on grilled alpaca. Those cute furry looking animals taste yum!
