After a great night's sleep (some of us having dreams, or possibly nightmares, of being back at university) in our own private dorm rooms we checked out and walked down the road to the Carlisle Castle. Parts of the castle are still being used by a local regiment, thus were off limits, but we did see the museum and the old dungeons. You could even see a section of the dungeon walls where prisoners from the Jacobite rebellion used to lick in an attempt to quench their thirst.

At this stage we were very close to the Scottish border and had to divert to see the old Hadrian's Wall. Ordered to be built by the Roman Emperor Hadrian, it was the northern border of the Roman Empire. It's amazing that there are remnants of the wall still in place. We also saw the remains of the Roman Birdsowald Fort. It was interesting to read that the mighty Roman Empire could not conquer the Scots past this point, hence the wall's construction.

With a little further to go we diverted off the motorway and finally hit the Scotland border. Rick's Mum, being a MacKenzie, was rapt to finally be in Scotland. Just over the border, on the Scotland side, is a little pub that doubles as a registry office. In the past you could get married in Scotland if you were 16 compared to the minimum age of 18 in England, hence people would cross the border to elope if they were underage.

After the obligatory snapshots at the border we drove onwards to Glasgow to stay the night with David's relatives, David, Judy and Jonathan in a town called Bearsden. They had a lovely house and showing great hospitality, Judy served up a huge home cooked meal for us to devour.
