Having already been to Bath a few weekends ago we took Rick's parents on the "Rick and Meg's Whirlwind Tour of Bath" taking in just the interesting sights very quickly as we were keen to get on the road for our long drive to the Lake District. Once they were happy they had seen all the interesting bits like the Abbey, Roman Baths, Circle and Crescent we headed on the motorway towards Windemere.

One thing we've learnt pretty quickly is that it takes next to no time to get places in Scotland. Coming from Australia we are used to driving long distances to go on holidays even just to get to another state. Here of course you can drive from one end of the island to the other in one long day. The size of their street directories makes the distance deceiving (we managed to buy the biggest map available. It is the size of an A3 page so open it takes up most of the front seat!). Judging how far you have to go is difficult as the size makes it seem further than it really is.

We have also fallen in love with their equivalent of a truck stop, called Moto's. When you pull off for petrol you also have the opportunity to do you grocery shopping, duck into Mark's and Spencer's, choose you lunch from a variety of places and sit by a lake with a water feature and baby ducks running around. If you really like it there you can even check into the Travel Lodge conveniently located amongst the shopping centre. All of this is in the middle of nowhere amongst nicely sculptured gardens which block the traffic noise. Wonder if this will ever be developed in Australia?

Once we dragged ourselves away from the Moto we drove the rest of the way to the Lake District and settled into our hostel in Hawkshead. It was an old Manor converted into a youth hostel. As it was Glenys' Birthday we headed into town for a pub meal. Happy Birthday Mum!
