Happy Anniversary Honey
Entry 90 of 220 | show all | print this entry |
Now what do you do when you're in a foreign country with your partner and it's your anniversary? Go out for a lovely romantic dinner, spend the night in? Well we thought about these and said "No! We want to travel the tube, meet interesting people and find a bloody place to live!"
Alas our two weeks in Heath St was coming to an end and we had no place to live. With no income, as Rick was trying to find work and Meg getting stuffed around by her nursing agency, we only wanted something short term. Checking out Gumtree.com luckily we found a couple of places in our price range, so after making a few phone calls and with our pocket London A-to-Z in hand we headed to the tube station.
Our first stop was out in West Acton. After walking for about 15 minutes down a really busy noisy highway we found the flat. Piles of empty bottles and renovation junk in the yard - this looked like the one! Upstairs we were presented a small room, facing the highway, with dated furniture. It was okay, but they wanted us to take over the lease, something we weren't interested in at all. With West Action crossed off our small list of possibilities, we headed over to Finsbury Park. At the tube station we were almost forced to take the train back one stop and catch a bus back as our tickets were for zone 1 and 2 and Finsbury park is in zone 3......just. Luckily Megan, having a minor spack attack in plain view of the ticket inspector, softened his heart and he ushered us out saying "I didn't see you, you didn't see me and no one saw us" saving us six pounds ($15 AUD) and our sanity.
We were supposed to meet our potential flat mate, Attila the Hungarian, at the station however we were unfortunately about 45 minutes late and quickly realised we didn't know his phone number. After calling every recently dialed phone number in the mobile (some twice because Megs didn't do it in any particular order in her state of panic and crankiness) we finally got on to him and he said he'd be there in five minutes. He walked us to the two storey terrace house in a quaint English street and showed off the two massive rooms that were available for rent. After checking the room out we looked at the common room (all the other rooms were now bedrooms) and met the other five Hungarian and one Estonian guy already living in the place. As Megs entered the room their eye's lit up with "finally we have woman!" looks. At this stage we were pretty desperate, having to either get drunk and crash on the couch for a few days or head back to the hostel. Leaving we shook Attila's hand saying we'd call him the next day to confirm we'd be definitely be moving in.
Attila began to walk us out and we tried to usher him back in saying we could find our own way back but he quickly mumbled that he didn't actually live there.......who the heck was he and where in the hell did he live? Weird. Walking back to the station we passed a BMW that had rear-ended another car. With about 15 people yelling and screaming at each other, a big fight was about to start. We just walked on by, casually crossing the road to avoid the melee.
Not forgetting it was our anniversary we spotted a Chinese restaurant that was still open at 11pm. Ordering a few dishes and some soft drink to make a toast, we had our romantic dinner for two, (this time it was within the budget) while watching the police cars and ambulance, lights on and sirens blaring, go flying down the road to the crash site; lovely.
