Where I stayed

Arriving early in the morning we decided to walk to our hostel Zimmer Frie. We'd booked this and our Moscow accommodation back in August as part of getting our Russian Visas. In Moscow we'd stayed at a place called Godzillaz. Godzillaz was great and we'd recommend it to anyone. Now, Zimmer Frie was a bit different, it looked and felt like a squat. It appeared we were the only backpackers staying there and even though we'd booked a dorm room, we were advised they had only female dorms (this contradicts their web page and our booking documents). Let's just say we wouldn't recommend staying there unless you really had to.

Having had a good nights sleep on the train we wandered down Nevsky Prospect, past Admiralty Gardens and onto the famous Peter the Great, the Bronze Horseman statue. St Petersburg is definitely a beautiful city. We walked past St Isaac's Cathedral and along the frozen river. At this time we were both freezing as it was about minus 24 degrees Celsius, so we were looking for somewhere to warm up. Heading back into town we passed the Church of the Resurrection of Christ also known as Church of Spilled Blood as it was here Alexander II was assassinated in 1881. This church looks a lot like St Basil's Cathedral in Moscow. Back on Nevsky Prospect we found a grocery store and raced in to buy some food and get the feeling back in our toes.

On our way back to our squat we saw something you just don't see back home. A stray dog was having a crap on the pavement, but as it's poo hit the ground we could see steam coming from both the new deposit and the hounds butt. Interesting.
