Ayers Rock resort

So we headed off after this trek to Yulara, about 200Kms away (I think), which is the name for Ayers Rock Resort, a little resort town with not much there just to cater for Ayer Rock tourists. And to charge them through the teeth. Camping is the cheapest but still more expensive than most of the hostels we've stayed in.

So again got there about sunset, cooked it up, had a few beers and headed to bed to get up early for the big sights day tomorrow.

Early Start to drive to The Olgas. These are probably the best thing I've seen. It's about 50kms from Ayer's Rock and is a series of Beehive rocks, which are about 300metres high and seperated by valleys with trees and just breathtaking scenery all around. Again we went for the long trek (the Valley of the Winds Trek - it sounds so exotic!!!)
which took about 3 hours again, but killed us because of the heat and the day before's trek and everything all rolled into one Ayers Rock 1
Ayers Rock 1
. But we couldn't help just stopping and looking all around every 2 minutes just to take it in as much as we could. So stunning. And then when we'd finally finished, grabbed some lunch and headed for the moment we'd been really waiting for I guess. The drive to Ayer's Rock. We's been passed it a couple of time as you have to to get to the Olgas, but we'd be getting a bit closer this time. Excitin!!!...

So we pulled up at Ayer's Rock Cultural Centre, had a look round, got a bit bored so wandered over to the main attraction. Stephan was too tired from the previous 2 treks so went back to the car while i did a 2 hour walk to Mala Gorge (on one side of the Rock) which took me half an hour there and back. Aussies must walk slow ay?

Took some photos of the rock from close up, but to be honest it's more of a spectacle from a small distance where you can see the whole thing and just be in awe at how big and just weird the whole thing is. Absolutely stunning though. After this we went back to get a few beers from the resort (bloody expensive, buy a slab before you go there if you're gonna be drinking) and drove back to the sunset viewing point to watch the rock at sunset.

Basically after this I was so drained from 3 days of seeing the most amazing things that we just had to go back and get drunk! After the Olgas I felt like i couldnt take anymore in, all the amazaing things roll into one. It's like going to Debenhams and smelling all the aftershaves one after the other. After the 4th amazing smelling one they all smell the same. My advice, spread them out over a few days. Makes it sound as if i didnt appreciate it which is so far from the truth. Was the best thing I've ever done. |Right up there with the volcano.
