Well what a difference the sleeper to Hong Kong was, not at all like the toilets on wheels Mac had grown to love so much. After a lenghty trawl through 2 passport controls (must keep the other Chinese out of Hong Kong) it was off on the last leg on the new metro system which was great. The weather was hot, the sun shinning, the streets full of little children smiling and the rivers ran with chocolate. After getting off the metro at Kowloon Mac and Mable were separted as they were put into Taxi's. Mac got the taxi driver who could not read the address given and tried to take him and the others to another Hotel, Lucky Louise had read her trip notes and informed the diver it was Aurther Rd NOT Archer Rd. Horrified the driver looked in his map book for a full second then throwing in to Mac said.... you find it. Eventually they did with a worried looking Mable in the Hotel foyer.
The hotel room took the word compact to the max, there was not enough room to swing a rat, but it was clean, had air con, a shower that worked and a western loo that flushed
In the evening Mac marvelled at the bright lights from Hong Komg side and asked if the Citibank were in so much trouble, why didn't they turn some lights off and save some money? Maybe someone should tell Mr Bush.
After a rubbish meal in an Irish Pub, not Macs choice even though there was rugby on the tv, it was time to hit the air-con and sleep, yes he was back in the land of his birth and loved it. Mac
The Chinese laundries here are even better than the ones in China, cheaper and quicker .. hoorah for clean clothes . The population are a real mix of everything you can imagine, so we are not getting stared at, which is nice : O ) The markets are great for mooching around, the Temple night market was my favorite, starts from 4 pm and goes on till late. They have lots of all sorts and great fish / shellfish places to eat at. Mac got very squimish at the Wan Chai food market that i wanted to see. They sell fresh stuff all kinds and sort of in a random fashion, so you get your fruit stall next to the meat, who is next to the stall selling underwear....there is bound to be logic in this as the Chinese aint daft...they invented things ya know. The locals are very into fresh produce, I tried to get pictures of the fish flapping about, but because they were flapping they are a bit blured. Mac didnt like watching a fish being cut in half while still alive, cant say it did much for me either. Its odd they are into such fresh stuff as thay also seem to like eating stuff thats been left laying around in the warm for a few years.....there are lots of shops with baskets of dried fish and shrimps sitting on the pavements.....yum : o (
Last night we went to SoHo and used the worlds longest esculator
Mac saw two of the Manic Street Preachers and got their autographs, they were very gracious and didn;t mind him invading thier table. Once signed he told them he was their biggest fan and that Hungry like a Wolf was his most favourate song, but was was the video with the water wheel about. He managed to escape before they asked for their pen back. Luke and Lousie were very happy as well as Mac sold them a photo copy of the autographed flyer for only 50$.
Hong Kong has changed since Mac was a small plastic mould. Gone the Hilton and Cricket Club but there were things he still recognised and remembered like the road to Replulse Bay and Mum shouting at Dad about him driving too close to the rocks on the side of the road... happy days. Went to see the Big Buddah on Lantau, got there by Metro, mad bus and down via the cable car. Well worth doing. Two things you should know about the Big Buddah, 1/ It is a Buddah 2/ It is big, also it points to China and NOT to the East as all the others do... see how full of interesting facts Mac is.
Last night in HK and Mac feels a bit sad, much seen but so much more to see.

. The area is full of bars and very westernised, great for people watching in the evening. The Manic Street Preachers were eating in this restaurant and Luke an all time fan of theirs from "splot" was too embarrassed to ask for their autographs....fair play, as Mac doesnt give a **** he got them to sign a flyer ....the one that dresses like a woman wasnt there, but the other two were very happy to have their dinner interrupted.
