Left Beijing about  7pm on the over night  "hard sleepr" to Xian. Trading Standards would be very happy with the description, 6 hard bunks per open carriage and 13 hours of fun was had bad all, especially when going  to the toliet ( Chineese style) on a moving train. As there are no doors it's tricky to sleep with people talkin, walking past or having a fag by your bed....nice! ( can you tell I have given up? ) The bottom bunks seem like a good bet, they have more head room, but everyone uses them as the seating area....nicer still when they are having their pot noodle dinner on your space. The top bunks have about 12" clearance, might not seem much ( well it's not is it) but for sleeping its the best bet, then you just abuse someone elses bottom bunk like the locals : o )

Mac loved the sleeper train, especially as he had cafined himself to death in Starbucks before he left.... international relationships may take some time to mend.  The toilets are fab, you can ligitimately pee everywhere.  Mac wished he had learned to read so he could have read a book... never mind, more beer next time.
