It was the first time any of us had seen the leaning tower - and boy does it lean. People seemed to be doing some form of Tai Chi until we realised that they were helping to prop up the tower (see photos). We had booked our climb up on the internet before leaving blighty - it was one of the few deadlines we were working to in our tour of Europe - 19th august, 15:50 at the ticket office next to the tower in Pisa in Italy - we made it, just; it doesn't take long away from the office before deadline hitting becomes quite tricky. Gill obviously had problems with the physics of the tower as we noticed that in every photo she was hanging on to something solid.

The boys flew home from Pisa without too much problem with the new hand baggage restrictions. We had read about the foiled plot to blow up planes in the UK and heard that they were not letting people take anything into the plane 01 Tai Chi?
01 Tai Chi?
. Hester's sister had flown out to Italy with two youngsters and no toys or books and had to endure the tut tutting of other passengers as they screamed and ran wild respectively.

Now Gill and I were to take the slow route home - without any schedule - no ferry booked no hotels booked - we would just go as we wished and of course as the camper wished.

So we started in Florence. We found an over crowed campsite but it was in walking distance of the city centre. Not only was the campsite over crowded but so was the city. OK we were tourists as well but there were far too many of us. The place was overflowing, for example the famous paintings in the Ufizzi were very effectively shielded by hundreds of Japenese drifting around in human waves being silently controlled by their ear pieces connected to some zombie master.

Finding the cathedral somewhat garish and Ponte Vecchio no where near as beautiful as the Rialto in Venice, we set off to the north east part of Italy and the new Yugosalvian states.
