Oddly, this place was a real letdown. There are 3 "monuments", two of which are called Mittens due to the rock outcrops which resemble human thumbs, and these rise out of the barren and flat land like pillars, with nothing else in sight. From the carpark viewpoint, that was the view and nothing else. There was a further fee if you wanted to go down to the valley but somehow, I didn't feel the urge to spend additional money just driving down to see 3 large rock outcrops. This was a place that had epitomised American Western movies but it looked pretty ordinary from my perspective. Also, light conditions were not good and the monuments looked very 2 dimensional with a single tone of red, set against a hazy blue sky.
There was a curious gift shop here which had a lot of Native American craft, but I wasn't really interested. So as the park closed its doors I headed off for Page, across the border into Arizona.
