After a nice sleep we woke up at 5 am. Arghhh…cant sleep in. Had breakfast at the hotel…lots of choice from congee to scrambled eggs. We had all the chinese stuff, when in China...
All we could see out our window was fog until the wedding party arrived downstairs. Other than the impossibly long convoy of european cars carrying the wedding party, the massive rockets that sent up confetti floated past our window on level 12!
We headed out for a spot of shopping to a pricey mall. No luck finding a Qipao (Cheungsam) but Selena managed to find a couple of nice jackets
Back to the hotel. A nice pot of Oolong tea at the lobby to rehydrate. Walked over to the other side of the motor way (using overbridge) to a little dumpling place. No English menu, but the waitress was very sweet and helped us order. She was much better when we wrote down what we wanted. Anyway she chose the food for us and it was yummy. Great lunch and made even better by very friendly service.
Had a nap in the afternoon to get over the jet lag and ridiculously early start. Took taxi to Quan Ju De for Peking duck. The taxi driver was very worried that we would get wet walking to the restaurant so helped us buy an umbrella.
Dinner at Quan Ju De was fantastic. The chef sliced the duck into thin slivers and the skin was super crunchy. The waitress showed us how to wrap the pancakes. We knew, but it was still very nice. She was very attentive and made sure there was a ready supply of sauce, spring onions and cucumber (no carrots). We also had shanghai greens – very yummy. Even the duck bone soup was nice. There was even a show with dancing, magic, puppets – what more can you ask for? Well, we went down the lift and realised that had left our recently acquire umbrella behind. Turns out our friendly waitress had already gone looking for us. Very sweet and considerate.
Great first day in Beijing.
