Flag of Italy  , Tuscany,

It was time to go back north to a more familiar, northern Italian atmosphere.  We drove back towards Rome, by-passed it, slept overnight in a car park on the freeway and followed the next day to Figline which is some 30 km south of Florence.
Figline had a proper super market so we could get our supplies at normal prices and there was a campsite nearby.  The campsite was of a high standard, located on a hill and therefore providing nice views of Tuscany.
Unfortunately they went ultra-modern and you could not use normal money in their shops and bars, instead you had to use their special debit card that you topped up with cash as needed.  This is quite a nuisance, as they don't accept credit cards either so the tourist needs to have cash.  Admittedly there was an ATM but, of course, there were fees when you took the cash out.

We rested at the campsite and headed for Florence the next morning.  This was the Italian Day of Independence so very few trains were scheduled.  No worries though, the one we needed ran on public holidays except ... that it came 2.5 hours late. Well, it was Italy after all.  We used the time to walk around Figline, tasting the great Italian gelato and watching a local parade.
Florence is a beautiful town with well-maintained historical buildings, clean and colourful.
Old streets and houses, the famous bridge and the open museum, they all create a unique atmosphere that is most enjoyable.
Still, the Santa Maria del Fiore cathedral stands out.  Its green and white marble exterior decorated with mural paintings and sculptures is truly impressive.
