There is a ring road around Rome (GRA) and as we approached it we stopped at a big rest area with shops and restaurants.  It also had an excellent tourist information office that, on the spot, booked a place for us at a campsite ideally positioned for visiting Rome.  We thought that service like that would await us at the approaches to every big European city but we were to be disappointed.  Finding campsites in itself was to prove a bit of a problem later on.
Anyhow, the campsite was right on the GRA, had a little bus commuting to and from the train/metro station and was of high standard.  We had a rest and finally a decent sleep.  Next morning we headed for Rome with great expectations.
