Got up at 6.30 am to find the weather was good and the heavy swell had gone down. Serviced the tanks on the camper ready for return and headed off to the whale watch centre. Few people on the trip probably because of the time and the previous bad weather. (yesterdays trip was abandoned). very smart boats with comfy airline type seats that whisk you at 30 knots to the whale watching area. Very professional operation with the boat having hydrophones to detect the whales and a spotter boat already at sea to identify the area they are in. Had very good talk on whale ecology on the way with big screen presentation.
Managed to locate five whales and got stunning views. When stopped you can stand on the roof viewing area. One came right up to the boat. just amazing.
Headed back to Christchurch with a stop at the Pegasus Bay winery for an excellent lunch just outside the city. I'd tidied the camper and managed to throw out the map of where the depot was (its not easy to find) but told Pat there was no problem and we could rely on my memory to get back. She demanded I phone the depot and ask for instructions. Did find our way back to our surprise as we couldn't find our way out when we collected it. Company knocked a day's hire off for the breakdown in Dunedin and ran us back to the airport for our flight to Auckland and home via LA. More thumbnails ...
