Set of from Haast on a misty morning through wild and rugged scenery. never been to a place so quiet. Drove for about an hour before we passed our first car on the West Coast Road. Began to get used to having the road to myself so much I felt annoyed when another vehicle appeared and I had to share it. Whne we passed another camper they waved madly relieved to find they were not alone. Stopped to enjoy the native forest on the way until we reached Fox Glacier. Asked about a helicopter trip to the glacier, but not enough people to make up a load. (They need three minimum) so moved on to Franz Joesph Glacier which is a bigger place. By the side of the road saw ski plane landings advertised. I had thought they only flew from Mount Cook. Rang up the free phone number and made a booking. They must have been quiet too as they asked when we wanted to go (now!) and sent the pilot down. just pat and I were enough for them. It was a pretty amazing experience. Even pat enjoyed it. Great view of both glaciers and mountains and a landing on Fox Glacier. The pilot switched the engine off so we could enjoy the silence. Celebrated with a nice lunch in town, such as it is and set off for Arthur's Pass. This is yet more dramatic scenery and as it was going dark decided to stop before the main ascent. Stopped in a field outside a pub come cafe. It had no customers and were pleased to see us. Kiwi calling in the night outside the van as we settled down for the night. DVD packed in but had heating food and some decent wine so were nice and cosy.
