Arrived Auckland at 9 am after a decent flight in a torrential downpour and picked up car. Heart sank when I saw it. We had been upgraded to a brand new Toyota, not a mark on it. Gleaming body work and body kit that is clearly designed to be ripped off on the first rough track it came to. I much prefer my hire cars pre-knackered. Some countries like Egypt are very thoughtful about this. Our Morley tour New Zealand adventure got started in the traditional manner, twice round the airport looking for the way out which included driving back into the car park and having to pay to get out. Bastards! Got lost looking for the motorway but eventually got on track for the Miranda Wetland Centre. People there very helpful and gave me directions to a high tide roost to see an endemic species Wrybill and the rare New Zealand Dottrel. As I suspected the car had great difficulty driving across the field and down the beach to the site. Great viewing however. Set off for the long drive to the glow worm caves. Really great but the heavy rain had caused the underground river to rise by 9 metres and we were the last people to have the boat ride to see the glow worms before the landing steps went under. Set off for Rotorura in the rain and arrived pretty tired at the hotel I'd booked. The room had its own spa which was pretty good and Pat and I relaxed with a good bottle of NZ wine.
