What a beautiful day!  We awoke to clearing skies and no rain.  Our trip started at 10 am and we probably had the best weather on the trip so far.  We found a seat on the upper deck of the boat and a nice young couple from the Netherlands sat across from us.
The pictures will tell the story of our cruise around the sound.  We visited two glaciers, Columbia and Meares.  We could only get up to about 9 miles from the Columbia Glacier as the icebergs pose too much of a hazard to travel through.  The large icebergs from below the surface of the water catch on the terminal moraine and the small bergs get caught behind.  This accumulation of ice is impossible to travel through.
The Meares Glacier is entirely different. It is smaller and is currently advancing rather than retreating.  We were able to get within mile of the glacier.  Harbor seals dot the icebergs in front of the glacier.
Along the way we saw picture perfect scenery and a number of different animals.  The critters we passed along the way included eagles, seals, Steller sea lions, sea otters, humpback whales, Dall porpoise, and many birds.
I'm still looking for an orca, however.  Maybe the next time.
After arriving back at Valdez, we drove around to see if we could find the black bear.  Sure enough he was walking along the streams of spawning salmon.
Tomorrow we will wander around town some more.
