Hi!

I'm currently sat at the computer of my oldest friend (oldest friendship that is, she's only 22), on day two of my journey from England to Australia. I have a very sore posterior, having cycled about 40 miles yesterday from Dartford to Faversham. I'm supposed to be going to Dover today, but I'm not. I'm waiting until Monday, when I shall feel much better.

A quick recap, in the form of FAQs, for the benefit of anyone who's not spoken to me in 18months:

1: What are you doing?

: I'm trying to cycle from England to Australia

2: Why?

: I think it will be fun

3: Will you be cycling around the deck when you catch ferries?

: No

4: Will you make a point of not using any other form of transport?

: No

5: How long do you think it will take?

: About 12 months

6: Have you done any training?

: No

7: Are you doing it for charity?

: No, but if you want to donate some money in my honour, please feel free. Pick your own charity (I like Amnesty International and Liberty, at the moment)

8: What's the route?

: Subject to change at a moments notice, but today it is as follows; UK, France, Belgium, Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Oman, India, Burma, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia

A year on, the picture is a little different: UK, France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, India, Pakistan, China, Tibet, China, [Philippines, but w/out bike] Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia.

9: Do you have a bike? (This is genuinely a frequently asked question. People can be very strange)

: Yes

10: In what sense are you cycling from Newcastle, UK to Newcastle, Oz?

: I came up with the plan while at university in Durham, which is near Newcastle, and I shall fly home from Sydney, which is near Newcastle, OK? What do you mean it's a bit of a stretch? Get over it.

Just a test to see if my messages get through now - Keep going and don't despair... the bruises and blisters will mend eventually. Love you. Mum
