The Atacama Desert
Trip Start May 03, 2005
35Trip End Oct 31, 2005
Have just arrived in San Pedro de Atacama with 4 others from my hostel in Salta. The journey was only 10 hours (not far in SA terms) but was particularly tough as we all had had only 2 hours sleep the night before after a Asado (BBQ) in the hostel and bacause we had to pass over 4200 metres in altitude.
San Pedro is a tiny very touristic little town with houses made out of clay/mud. We were led to a house by a guy at the 'bus station'. To say it was basic is an understatement so we moved (struggling with my baggage which is becoming cumbersome) to another place where there is a reed roof, comfy beds and hot water. yippee!
Off to see the moon rise in the desert tonight and then have a 4am start to see the geysers.
Heading to Santiago on wednesday evening. 23 hour bus ride which will be hell but the flight was $517 so just a little too expensive after 6 months without pay.
I'll hopefully get some great pictures over the next few days.
Cíao for now!
