Mogli in the Jungle, Brazil
Trip Start May 03, 2005
35Trip End Oct 31, 2005
Just arrived in Manaus after 4 days on the Amazon River and now I am on the Rio Negro.
When we got to the frontier with Brasil, there was no real system to enable us to catch the boat on to Manaus. An Australian guy, Dave and I were hurried by 2 rather unscrupulous characters to the police station to have our passports stamped, we then quickly changed money and bought our hammocks and then headed in a fast boat to catch the boat to Manaus. Meanwhile it started getting dark - we nearly headed for land at one point (the driver was using a torch to light his way). It was a rather stressful experience and I was really thankful that Dave was there. We were fleeced a little (well, actually a lot) but at least we didnīt have to stay in the middle of nowhere until the next boat left. The main boat had started to set off and we pulled a James Bond manoevre and pulled alongside. Dave and I had actually joked about this earlier but no way did we think we would be clambering on to the side of the boat. We got there anyway and were the source of much amusement and conversation for the next 2 days.
It has been an interesting few days, sleeping hammock class for 4 nights. It was cosy to say the least. On the first night I had the guy next to meīs head on my shoulder and I had to boing him with my hammock to get him to move.
Met some lovely people onboard and planning to go to the jungle with Thomas, a Swiss guy, hopefully tomorrow.
Hope all is well with you.
Will catch up properly soon!
