It was very hot and steamy yesterday - much more like we’d expected - but as it didn’t look that hot from the hotel room we were totally over dressed and spent a very hot morning walking round the city. We tried to fit in as much sightseeing as we could before we left for the airport. We really wish we could have stayed here longer it’s the sort of place we love (Peter and Julie - you’d love it too).
First we got on the tram - I was wrong - they are three seats wide not two - but are still very cute. We went to Wan Chai - which is a predominantly Chinese area of market stalls and small shops all selling weird and wonderful objects. Lots of dried fish, chickens feet, pigs trotters, eggs with embryos in them, fake designer clothes - everything you could ever want (and more besides!) - it’s where the coastline was before they started to reclaim land to build on.
Then we had a long flight to Sydney (with a decent selection of films - I finally got to watch the last Harry Potter one) and then a short flight to Auckland. It was pouring with rain in Sydney and we got drenched walking over the tarmac to get on the plane - and our luggage got even more soaked sitting on the trolley waiting to be loaded - the clothes were still very damp when we unpacked them in the hotel.
We seem to have hit Auckland at the wrong time - we went down to the waterfront to have a meal and found out that all the yachts from the Round the World race are in the harbour at the moment and - as it is St Patrick’s Day (and a Saturday) - the whole harbour front was awash with drunken people dressed in green - green tutus, green feather boas, green leprechaun suits etc etc ! And this was only at 7pm - goodness knows what they will be like by closing time - there were a lot who couldn’t stand up even then. Not really the best introduction to the place!
