We didn't have time to go right up to the top of the North Cape so headed back on the long drive back to Auckland via the west coast. En route we drove through the Waipoua Forest which is famous for the remaining massive Kauri trees that are amongst the largest in the world.
We stopped the night at Matakohe where they have a museum about the Kauri and the history of the settlers and their saw mills. Maggi was underwhelmed by it all, but the wood is very beautiful and the logs are huge. There wasn't a great choice of accommodation so we decided to stay at our first homestay in New Zealand. Our hosts were an 80-year old couple, very traditional but they gave us kind hospitality and good home-made food.
