Maggi chicked out of driving such a large beast as Kiri but Jerry was getting to grips with her nicely as we negotiated mountain roads to our 1st NZ national park, Mount Cook. NZ is famous for its many great tramps (treks) e.g. Milford, Keppler, Routeburn, Abel Tasman etc) but we felt as this was our 1st time we wanted to see as much as possible. So rather than do a long walk we decided to cover more ground and do day walks in each location. This way we'd also get lots of exercise and see diverse scenery.
On the way we hit another beautiful lake Pekaki where we saw our 1st view of Mount Cook (the highest peak in NZ). The weather can be a hit and miss in the spring but we were off to a glorious start. We stopped off at the DOC (Department of Conservation) for some walk recommendations, Sealy Tarns and Meuller Lakes. 3/4 way up Sealy Tarns it started getting a bit high and more like climbing so we came back down but the views were amazing. We then did the Meuller Lakes circuit (Maggi proudly navigating 2 swing bridges on her own) before ending up right in front of Mount Cook in perfect weather. After 6 hours of walking we watched a beautiful sunset over Mount Cook in another gorgeous spot all to ourselves.
