After some shopping around we were chuffed to be able to secure a 4 person campervan for the bargain price of NZ$74 per day (about GBP30). Normally they are double that price at this time of year. We'd been recommended by people who'd hired before to get a larger van but Jerry was a bit daunted when he 1st laid eyes on something bigger than a Ford transit. The 1st hour was a bit fraught as we negotiated Christchurch's busy roads to find a supermarket to stock up on supplies, but soon we were on our way on quieter roads to the Banks Peninsula and the quiet town of Akaroa at its far end. We pitched up at an idyllic spot by the shore and cooked our 1st meal for 4 1/2 months of pasta with chicken pesto sauce, washed down with some local wine.
We dubbed the van Kiri (after the famous NZ opera singer). We unpacked our gear as this was to be home for the next 18 days and snuggled up in the cozy double over the drivers cab. The van has everything you could possibly need: 3 ring stove, loo, shower, heating, fridge, sinks and seating area. After our 1st home cooked english breakfast we set off into town and toured a few galleries before heading back to Christchurch and then the open road of NZ.
